The east Devon town of Sidmouth really is a jewel in the crown. John Betjeman once wrote of Sidmouth “A town caught still in a timeless charm”, also “A feast of visual delight” which it still is.
The communal gardens in Sidmouth are beautiful and have won many coveted awards over the years and are still maintaining their high standards. The beaches are clean; and although there are many visitors during the summer they never seem overcrowded.
A stroll along the esplanade is a real treat. No one here is in a hurry, none of the manic hustle and bustle of many other seaside towns, just an air of peace and calm.
To the south of the esplanade is the beach with the ocean stretching out in front of you. To the north is a stately parade of Regency buildings, beautiful in both architecture and colour. To the east is the home of the life boat, small fishing boats and the Sidmouth yacht club. To the west you will find Jacobs ladder; a veritable ‘stairway to heaven’ leading to stunning views and the clocktower café where you can sit in the tranquillity of the Connaught gardens and enjoy your refreshments. Incidentally, the esplanade has featured in at least two period TV programmes including: ‘Jeeves and Wooster’ and ‘Poirot’.
